Junkies reveal true horror of addiction.
A HEROIN addict has told how the lethal drug destroyed his life and killed his brother and two cousins.
His story is just one of a number of extraordinary accounts related in a new report on drug abuse in Athlone and Portlaoise.
Darkness On The Edge Of Town, by Dr Niall McElwee and Grainne Monaghan, features quotes from addicts and their families in both towns.
Portlaoise woman Marie, talking about her 20-year-old addict son, said: "He pukes up everything, he's not even eating. His trousers are falling off him. It's terrible, just unbelievable."
During one interview, addict Kevin took off his shirt and showed Dr McElwee two morphine patches on his back.
He said he had stolen the patches from a cancer patient.
