Julia Anas, 87.

GRAFTON Julia Anas of Grafton died Saturday, January 26th, at the age of 87, after a long battle with emphysema and heart disease.

She was born in Waterbury, CT, July 7, 1920, the daughter of Joseph Prifty and Martha Petrides both of Albania. She was a 1937 Honors graduate of Wilby High School and worked in her father's downtown restaurant until her marriage in 1953 to James Anas of Albany, NY. Julia moved to the Worcester/Auburn area before finally settling in Grafton. She raised two children and worked as a waitress for many years at the Driftwood Steak House on route 9 in Shrewsbury. She loved to swim and followed many of the local area sports teams. Her prize possession was an autographed picture of ex-Celtics player and Waterbury native Ryan Gomes. She was a self-taught pianist, and an avid crossword puzzle fan, but her favorite pastime, the one that she shared together with her late husband, was playing one endless game of gin rummy. It became a weekend ritual at the Anas home, and Julia rarely lost a game. After winning a battle with breast cancer in 1980, she lost her husband to heart disease in 1981. She is survived by sons James Jr., of Arlington, MA, and Gerald of Grafton, MA.

Calling hours are 6-9 PM Tuesday, January 29th at the Roney Funeral Home North Chapel, 152 Worcester St. (Rt. 140 & 122) in North Grafton. Funeral Services will be held the following day Wednesday, January 30th, at 1:00 p.m. in St Nicholas Orthodox Church, 34 Gold St. (@ Memorial Dr. Rt. 140) in Shrewsbury. She will then be laid to rest with her husband in Worcester County Memorial Park in Paxton. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent in Julie's name to the Meals on Wheels program of the Grafton Senior Center, 30 Providence Road., Grafton, MA 01519.
