Journalists Not Arrested due to Professions - Erdogan.

Summary: ANKARA (Cihan) - None of the journalists who have been arrested were put behind bars because of their professions, Turkey's prime minister said on Tuesday.

Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan reiterated once again that recent detentions of journalists had nothing to do with his government, as alleged by opposition and some international media organizations.

None of the 27 journalists who are currently in jail have been prosecuted for "criticizing the government", but because "attempting to topple the government, membership in a terrorist organization, sex abuse and forgery," Erdogan told a regular meeting in the Turkish parliament.

A Turkish court jailed seven journalists last week over links to a clandestine network accused of plotting to overthrow the government.
