ANGLING: Perton's Barry Jones edged to victory in round four of the Wolverhampton AA Canal Challenge. The Grub Street to the Junction Inn Section of the Shropshire Union Canal at Norbury Junction in Stafford provided the venue for a keenly-contested match.
Jones (Sensas Lifestyle MG) grabbed glory on peg 63 with 7-11-4 of hybrids, roach and perch tempted on pole-fished caster, red maggot and hemp.
Hot on his heels was Stafford-based Alan Round, manager of Sensas Lifestyle MG, who caught skimmers, hybrids and roach, topped up with 70 small squatt and pinkie-fish for 7-10-12 from peg 70. Cannock's Simon Nickless (Sensas Black Country) was third with 7-2-0 of mostly hybrids caught on poled caster at peg three.
The top 20 go though to the two-day September final.
? The Wolverhampton Over 60s Club Open was held on the Jubilee Waters above and below Rodbaston Lock at Rodbaston where Brewood-based Stuart Brailsford claimed the spoils.
Brailsford (Bridgtown Soc AC) led the way with three big skimmers and a few perch caught on pole-fished bread punch and caster for 6-9-10 from peg eight, the second peg above the lock on the reed beds.
Ivan Davies (Wolverhampton AA VDE) followed with 5-10-0 of bream and perch at peg two, leaving Chadsmoor's Keith Holbrook (Rough Hay AC) in third with 5-7-14.
? Paul Turner bagged the win in the latest Stoke City DAA Open.
The match was fished on the Shropshire Union Canal at Norbury Junction in Stafford with Wolverhampton-rod Turner (Bag'em/Maver Midlands) topping the charts from peg 112 with 13-10-0 of perch to 2lb, roach, hybrids and skimmers. Keith Hulland (Team Eclipse) was second with 10-13-12 and Walsall's Steve Cope (Four Ashes AC) into third with 10-12-4.
