Jolly in silver strike.

WILL JOLLY (City of Newcastle) hit the silver medal spot in the ASA Open Water championships at Rother Valley. Jolly, swimming in the 3km race for 19 to 24-year-olds went away with Matthew Brecon (Loughborough) from the other swimmers in the race and together they swam a steady pace for the first two laps of the three-lap race.

On the last kilometre lap, Jolly slip-streamed Brecon to get ready for the fast finish. With 500m to go Brecon made a spurt and Jolly gradually got back to him, but Jolly could not match the Loughborough lad's final sprint. In the end it was the same as the last three years - gold for Brecon and silver for Jolly in 35min 25sec.

Swimming in the 14 years 1,500m race, City of Sunderland's Laura Taylor picked up the bronze medal in 20min 9sec.

In the 15/16 year races over 1,750m Reece Hindmarsh (Newburn) came him sixth in the boys' race with 21min 1sec, while Lucy Ellis (City of Sunderland) came ninth in the girls' race with 21min 55sec.
