Joint venture gears Vivo up for growth across all Ireland.

John Henderson and Mangan Bros in partnership deal

The growth of the Vivo symbol group is set to accelerate after the formation of a joint venture covering the island of Ireland.

The deal has been agreed between John Henderson, based near Belfast in Northern Ireland, and Mangan Brothers of Ennis in the west of the republic.

Wholesaler and retailer John Henderson distributes to 500 Spar, VG and Vivo stores and has a subsidiary, Millar Group, which operates 38 company owned c-stores.

In 1994 Henderson entered the Irish Republic with Vivo and there are now 53 retailers with a turnover of more than 35m [pounds sterling].

Mangan Brothers operates the Mace franchise in the west of Ireland serving 125 retailers and also operates eight cash and carries.

Under the agreement, Henderson will continue to market Vivo in Northern Ireland and the east of the republic, and Mangan Brothers will market Vivo in the west, but will supply ambient goods to all Vivo members in the republic.

In addition the partners will develop a fresh and frozen food distribution service to Vivo and Mace retailers in the republic from Henderson's distribution centre at Mallusk, near Belfast.

Vivo chief executive Dara Hogan said the deal provided benefits for both the parties and the retailers they serve.

He said: "Mangan had reached maximum penetration for Mace in the West of Ireland and this will give them an opportunity to expand."

He said that retailers would benefit from improved distribution and a greater range.
