Johnson Health Network to Reduce Backup Window and Costs With ExaGrid; Unique Byte-Level Data Reduction Technology Saves Costly Disk Space and Enables Faster and More Reliable Backups and Restores.

WESTBOROUGH, Mass. -- ExaGrid Systems, Inc., the leader in cost-effective disk-based backup, today announced that Johnson Health Network has selected ExaGrid(R) to streamline and improve its data backup.

Located in Stafford Springs and Enfield, Connecticut, Johnson Health Network is expanding its data center and deploying an electronic medical records system enabling the organization to transition the storage of its e-patient information from an ASP solution to onsite. This data growth, combined with the need for a tighter disaster recovery plan, motivated the health network to seek alternatives to its existing backup process which involved writing some backups to their primary storage array and some to a tape-based backup system.

Johnson Health Network selected ExaGrid's turnkey disk-based backup system to reclaim the 50% of their expensive primary storage space set aside as a temporary place to store backup data and to reduce the 22 to 28 hours it takes to backup data to tape.

Johnson Health Network will be using the ExaGrid system with their existing Symantec Backup Exec protection solution. ExaGrid's ability to work with Backup Exec was an important criterion for selection as it meant no change to their existing processes.

"Before we selected ExaGrid, we considered storing more backups on our primary storage array and adding a second array at another site for disaster recovery, but it would have increased our backup costs exponentially," said Paul Russell, CIO and site director of Johnson Health Network. "Using ExaGrid, we will recover 50% of the live disk space we had allocated to backups and reduce the cost of redundant backups across the WAN. We also anticipate that the verification process will be quicker and more reliable."

ExaGrid's disk-based backup system helps streamline backups by providing 2 to 1 data compression for the last backup along with unique byte-level delta data reduction that reduces data from all previous backups by 20 to 1. ExaGrid's byte-level delta technology stores only deltas, or changes, from backup to backup instead of storing full file copies. This approach significantly reduces the amount of data stored, saving costly disk space and providing fast backups and restores.

Johnson Health Network will install a second ExaGrid system off-site to eliminate tape and to provide faster data recovery in the event of a disaster. ExaGrid is extremely cost effective as a second site because its byte-level delta technology only moves changes, requiring minimal WAN bandwidth.

Johnson Health Network is an 89-bed acute care facility serving 120,000 patients per month across its nine network members, including Johnson Memorial Hospital, Evergreen Health Care Center, Home and Community Health Services, Johnson Occupational Medical Center and Johnson Surgery Center.

"ExaGrid's innovative approach is a perfect fit for Johnson Health Network, and the dramatic reduction in its backup window and greater overall efficiency will have a real impact in their day-to-day operations," said Bill Andrews, president and CEO of ExaGrid Systems. "Also, ExaGrid's ability to support a second, off-site copy of their backup data while using WAN resources efficiently will help them to realize their vision of tape elimination."

About ExaGrid Technology

ExaGrid is a turnkey plug-and-play solution that sits behind existing backup applications and enables faster and more reliable backups and restores. Customers report that backup windows are reduced by 30 to 80%. ExaGrid's unique byte-level delta data reduction and last backup compression, coupled with high quality SATA drives, is on average about 25-30% the price of standard drives without data reduction. This unique approach reduces the amount of disk space needed to at least 20 to 1.
