Johnson & Johnson's Advanced Sterilization Products and Minntech Corp. Unveil New Strategic Alliance for Minntech's Automatic Endoscope Reprocessor and Proprietary Peracetic Acid Solution.

IRVINE, Calif.--(BW HealthWire)--Feb. 16, 1998--Advanced Sterilization Products (ASP), a member of Johnson & Johnson's family of companies and manufacturer of the STERRAD(R) Sterilization System for medical and surgical instruments, and Minntech Corporation, an international leader in the manufacture of chemical sterilants and reprocessing systems, Monday announced the formation of a worldwide marketing alliance for Minntech's automatic endoscope reprocessor and sterilizing/disinfecting solution.

Under terms of the multiyear alliance, ASP will market Minntech's AER PLUS(tm), a proven, high-quality system for processing flexible endoscopes, and a new peracetic acid solution recently cleared for marketing by the FDA. The disinfectant/sterilant, which will be marketed as CIDEX(tm) PA Solution, offers rapid high level disinfection and sporicidal activity at room temperature conditions. Service and training for these products will be provided by ASP.

According to Tralance O. Addy, Ph.D., president of Advanced Sterilization Products Worldwide, the alliance with Minntech complements the company's 1997 agreement with Getinge/Castle under which ASP markets the company's washer/disinfection systems. "With the addition of Minntech's AER PLUS and CIDEX PA Solution, ASP now offers total solutions for instrument processing -- systems that combine a full range of high-quality products and services with a dedicated customer support team that is unmatched in the industry."

Minneapolis-based Minntech's President and Chief Executive Officer Thomas J. McGoldrick, stated, "We are excited to be part of this important strategic alliance with Advanced Sterilization Products. Partnering Minntech's reprocessing technology with the global resources of ASP will provide the endoscopy community with a superior product and support package."

The introduction of flexible endoscopes more than 30 years ago provided a breakthrough, especially in the fields of gastroenterology (GI) and pulmonary medicine. These flexible instruments allow the diagnosis and treatment of diseases that rigid instruments do not and, as a result, procedures using flexible endoscopes have become an important part of nearly every area of hospital practice. Because they contain sensitive optics used to view the interior of the body, flexible endoscopes require careful cleaning and disinfection to prevent the transfer of infections. Total GI procedures are expected to have continued 8.2 percent annual growth through the year 2000 to reach nearly 19 million annually.

Advanced Sterilization Products, a member of the Johnson & Johnson family of companies, manufactures and markets innovative sterilization, disinfection, and cleaning technologies and products that provide safe, effective, and economically sound solutions for the needs of healthcare providers. The company is based in Irvine.

Minntech Corp. is a leading medical device manufacturer of advanced technology in electronics, solutions, fibers, and plastics. The company's core technologies are used in dialysis, reprocessing and sterilants, cardiosurgery, and water purification.
