John Pepper of Procter & Gamble Announces New Awards Program for the Support of Quality Family Programs.

CINCINNATI, Nov. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- During acceptance remarks for the "Advertising Council Award for Public Service," John E. Pepper, chairman and chief executive of Procter & Gamble (NYSE: PG), announced the creation of a new awards program to recognize achievements in the development and broadcasting of family programming by networks, studios, and advertisers. The award, created by major advertising industry associations and P&G, will be sponsored and coordinated by the Advertising Council, the Association of National Advertisers, the American Association of Advertising Agencies, and the American Advertising Federation. The first awards event will take place next fall, with criteria for selection to be announced early in 1999.

At the 45th Annual Advertising Council Dinner, Pepper challenged the influential audience, who represents the country's media infrastructure, to commit to influencing at least one hour of quality family programming over the next year. "If every person in this room delivered that one hour, we'd generate nearly three hours of family programming for every day of the year," he said. "What a difference that would make in the lives of our children."

Procter & Gamble has long been a supporter of quality programming. P&G and Johnson & Johnson recently chaired a roundtable discussion with other major advertisers on the subject. The group called for a significant increase in the availability of early evening programming that is suitable for the whole family to watch together. "Collectively, we have more influence on what children and family see and hear than any other group in this country," Pepper said as he closed his remarks at the Ad Council Dinner. "We can be an incalculable force for good in influencing the lives of children if we focus on it. Let us make the coming year one of significant progress."
