John Nesbitt: Sculptor.

John Nesbitt: Sculptor, Phoenix Films & Video, Inc., 468 Park Avenue, New York, NY 10016. VHS, 29 minutes, $315.00.

This videotape reaches far below the surface of a typical artist's biography to evaluate and compare the environment's effect upon a man's life work. Nesbitt, through his words and work, presents viewers with his notions about art, the environment and audiences--which he prefers to be children. The presentation discusses the influences on the sculpture of John Nesbitt, his view of rhythm and our predetermined responsibility for creating beauty, why he works in abstractions, why he considers art a "hard" job, and his retreat from the gallery scene. It goes on to explain the relationship between sculpture and poetry as Nesbitt sees it, and a number of other beliefs the sculptor holds about his work and the world of art. In sum, this unique biography delves into an artist's beliefs, views and passions regarding art and its responsibilities to society and nature.

This is a beautifully produced and presented biography that should appeal to secondary and college students. It has special appeal in that it addresses sculpture, an art form that is woefully under-experienced at all levels of instruction. It is far from the how-to-do-it types that currently clutter the catalogues and shelves.
