John L. Tishman speaks on 'partnering.' (chairman and CEO of Tishman Realty and Construction Company Inc. addresses Washington Building Congress)

In a recent address to the Washington Building Congress, John L. Tishman, chairman and CEO of Tishman Realty & Construction Co., Inc., explored one of the strongest trends in the real estate and construction industry today - "Partnering in the '90s: Combining the Best of Design and Construction to Build America."

Though it is not new in general, the concept of partnering in the building industry is generating a surge of interest among all types of companies construction firms, architects, interior designers, engineering consultants according to Tishman. "By tapping the singular strengths of each partnering firm, thereby bringing together the very best of the best, the process creates an experienced and talented team specifically tailored to the project at hand."

Tishman explained: "In a business like ours--design and construction--we can best win an assignment and deliver the goods by forming partnerships that .draw on each of our strengths, rather than to have each individual discipline present itself separately and in competition, with its counterpart, which generally serves only to create adversarial relationships before and into the design and construction process."

"I believe partnering in the building business is more important than ever because if all the parties involved--though not necessarily contractually bound as partners--act more like partners, our clients are the winners and so are we," he said.
