John Barrowman is Captain Jack.

Cast your mind back to the end of the last series and Captain Jack Harkness was mourning the loss of his love Ianto Jones, killed during the Children of Earth drama.

He begins Miracle Day hiding out in Washington DC, until he reunites once more with Gwen Cooper as the pair try and determine why people all over the world have stopped dying.

John says: "Torchwood is without a base now and on the run, still trying to do good for people while big government is trying to stop them. Gwen Cooper is in hiding. Jack is somewhere on the planet watching over her. He has kept his eye on Gwen while he's been hiding out in America and he's been making sure no-one utters anything about Torchwood. He doesn't want it on the radar.

"But then this amazing thing happens, and it's up to Jack and Gwen to group together again and there are some fantastic moments.

"And of course, we have new characters to contend with like Rex Matherson from the CIA, (played by former ER star Mekhi Phifer) as well as Bill Pullman, who is a psychotic killer."

But John, who first starred as Captain Jack Harkness in Doctor Who, says Jack goes back to his darker side in Miracle Day.

"He reverts to his con man roots, but he uses it for good, rather than selfish reasons," he explains.

"The gun that Captain Jack is using has changed because it was destroyed in the Hub. And since we're filming in LA I can't be wearing an inch thick wool coat anymore.

"It's still an RAF-designed coat, though thinner and nipped and tucked at the waist."

John, who was raised in San Diego, said he was hugely excited about taking the show to America, turning down several offers from other US shows to stay working on his "baby".

The 44-year-old Glaswegian-born actor and presenter, says: "I knew we were going to come back to film another series so I was like a champagne bottle awaiting word from (executive producers) Julie Gardner and Russell T Davies.

"I was always kept in the loop, just waiting for us to get the green light and when we did, the cork popped.

"It's incredible to be filming in the US.

To have something that we are all so passionate about, myself, Russell, Julie and Eve, who have been here from the beginning since the embryonic stage of Torchwood, it's just amazing to think we shot it on both sides of the Atlantic.

"It's going to be bigger and better.

"I think the story is amazing. I like to find out what's happening as I'm going along, I don't like to find out too much before shooting. People know I'm a geek myself when it comes to science fiction, so I like to be surprised when I read the scripts.

"It's exciting for me to find out as I'm going along and that's exactly what I did while we were filming Miracle Day too."

John promises that the new series is the "sexiest yet".

"I'm naked in one episode - I am full-on naked," he laughs. "I am bumping and grinding in this one! The true die-hard fans know Jack is omnisexual - he likes men and women - but if you only watched this series, without seeing any of the others, you would think that Jack is gay.

"It's a great job. One day, I get to shoot a helicopter and save the world, and a couple of days later, I get to have nude scenes with a 24-year-old.

"It's the most perfect job in the world." But whereas his co-star Eve has had to get used to living in the United States, being based overseas was not a new experience for John.

"I've lived in the States before so I'm used to living there. For me, it's not so much of a culture shock because I used to live out in the US. I went to school in San Diego and spent time in LA so what was really thrilling for me was to see people like Eve and Kai Owen coming over and seeing their reaction.

"It's amazing for them. LA can spit you up and chew you out so it's nice that they have a group of people who are around if they have any questions.

"Filming at Warner Brothers, where they used to shoot ER, was amazing. The first day I drove up there they wouldn't let me in because I have a Land Rover and it was full of boxes.

"I pulled up to film my first sequence but they wouldn't let me in because they wanted to check all the boxes because they thought I was a terrorist!

"But then to drive in and pull into your own parking space marked 'Torchwood' is just amazing. I've filmed at Universal with Desperate Housewives before but it was never a show that was mine so Torchwood has been a completely different experience.

"I've loved every minute of it." Such is his love for Torchwood, John turned down several offers for other US shows.

"I was approached by House, Grey's Anatomy, Brothers and Sisters, and another show for CBS so lots was happening.

"But Torchwood is my baby, and I've been there since the beginning and this is important to me.

"I love playing Captain Jack; it's the role of a lifetime, a dream role for me."
