Joe proves he's made of the write stuff.

DESPITE enrolling on LJMU's drama course, Joe Ward Munrow never had any ambitions to become an actor, let alone a playwright.

So it still comes as something of a surprise - albeit a happy one - to the 27-year-old that he's now earning his living penning stories for the stage.

He explains: "I didn't really have SURPRISE: Playwright Ward any idea or inclination to be a playwright until I did the YEP Young Writers programme, and that was just luck really because my girlfriend did it before me and said 'you should do this'.

"It re-ignited my passion to get back into drama and writing."

Joe Munrow " He adds: "Going home to Deptford and saying I'm playwright, I'm still not that comfortable. But I suppose as soon as Held goes up, I am."

Since playwrights don't have a good track record in Deptford (tavern Christopher Marlowe was stabbed to death in a tavern there) it's probably best Joe is busy in Liverpool.

Held premieres at the Playhouse Studio next month.

There was a rehearsed reading at last year's Everyword, but this is now the real deal complete with an experienced Liverpool cast - Pauline Daniels, Ged McKenna and Alan Stocks.

It's centred on a mother and her two sons, the stories they tell, their memories and the stories those memories belie.

"The play's about dementia," says Joe. "My grandmother died of Alzheimer''s so I had something to draw. And it's also quite pertinent because with an ageing population, everyone I talk to has an experience of an elderly relative with dementia."

The story is told with a "mixture of naturalism and non-naturalism" he adds "because obviously no one really knows what the subject's experience of dementia would be like".

Meanwhile what of Joe's plans for the future? "If I can keep writing plays and people enjoy them and I can earn my living doing that, I'd be more than happy." ? Held is at the Playhouse Studio from November 8 to December 1.
