Joe Williams: A Song Is Born.
Music videos normally are associated with MTV-like productions featuring psychedelic light shows and scantily clad dancers backing up this week's hot singer. There is a market, however, for a more mellow approach, and Joe Williams' concert performance at California's picturesque Paul Masson Winery amply fills the bill. Backed by the legendary George Shearing on piano, Neil Swainson on bass, and Paul Humphrey on drums, Williams is a consummate song stylist, swinging effortlessly from blues to jazz to ballads to rock. Ranging from a poignant "Little Girl Blue" to a gospel-like "A Child Is Born," with a playful "Shake, Rattle, and Roll" thrown in, more than a dozen numbers hold the audience enthralled, clear evidence of why Williams was named best male vocalist by the 1992 Downbeat Critics Poll. Years after rap and heavy metal are a bad memory, this video still will hold up for good listening.
