Jewel in the crown; Queen lends Kate wedding gift necklace from an Indian king.
DAZZLING Kate shows last night that when it comes to looking regal she and the Queen might just be neck and neck...
The Duchess of Cambridge drew gasps as she showed off a priceless diamond necklace borrowed from the Queen.
The glittering piece of jewellery was a wedding present in 1947 from the Nizam of Hyderabad, who was a king in India.
Kate glammed up last night for her first official evening out of the year.
It follows reports she is undergoing a makeover, supported by the Queen, to look more regal.
Kate, 32, is also reported to be making sure her hemlines are longer and outfits more formal to emphasise her royal status. She made a short speech at the fund-Her cheaper raising gala at the National Portrait Gallery, endearingly stumbling at the end and putting her hand on her chest.
Kate, patron of the venue in Central London, said: "The gallery's achievements are exceptional.
"They hold the most extensive collection of portraits in the world, and their unique and brilliant exhibitions never fail to inspire us all."
Despite the famed exhibits - and a host of celebs including actress Liz Hurley, photographer David Bailey, Olympic rowing champ Katherine Grainger and rock star Bryan Adams - all eyes were on Kate and her necklace.
The choice of jewellery was a far cry from her last public appearance, in December, when she wore a [euro]24.99 necklace from high street chain Zara. Kate mingled with the guests last night while Prince George was at home with dad Wills.
