Jet boating plus brunch or dinner ... out of Grants Pass.

Jet boating plus brunch or dinner . . . out of Grants Pass

You're short on time, but you want toexperience the fabled scenery of southern Oregon's Rogue River? Beginning in mid-May, two Grants Pass companies offer 2- to 5-hour jet boat cruises on the middle Rogue, including dinner and brunch. For travelers on Interstate 5, it's a convenient way to get a taste of the river--and some country cooking--without the time commitment of a three- or four-day raft trip or a drive to the coast for a jet boat ride from Gold Beach.

Both companies originate their river tripsin downtown Grants Pass. A. 2-hour afternoon excursion takes you through still water and a few rapids to precipitous Hellgate Canyon. Five-hour trips ply more rapids and take you to Grave Creek, at the head of the river's wilder canyon; these include a lunch stop. You might see osprey overhead, or great blue herons flapping away as your boat approaches. Hold on to your hat (or better yet, don't wear one); it's likely to go flying as the craft speeds into an upriver wind.

Daily dinner and weekend champagnebrunch cruises follow the same route as the 2-hour excursions but include a meal stop at a secluded riverside restaurant; from the boat landing, you walk to the restaurant or hitch a ride on a farm wagon. Dinner cruises get you back to town just before dark.

Prices are about the same at each company;rates for children (ages 4 through 11) are about half the adult fare. Two-hour excursions cost $12, 5-hour trips $30 (plus about $5 for lunch), dinner cruises $28 to $30, brunch cruises $23 to $26. Reservations are advised.

Hellgate Excursions, (503) 479-7204. Theoriginal jet boat tour company on the middle Rogue now operates out of Riverside Park, off Seventh Street on the river's south bank (the dock is wheelchair-accessible). Trips are scheduled through September. A hearty country-style brunch or dinner is served at the OK Corral.

An excellent brunch or dinner is served at Doubletree Place, a historic homestead just upstream from Hellgate Canyon.
