Jermaine Pennant has opened up on the one time he tried drugs as a 12-year-old - and was sick.

The former Arsenal and Liverpool winger discusses the incident in his explosive new autobiography, Mental, which is released on Thursday.

Pennant had a troubled childhood but insists he never turned to drugs - apart from one occasion when his father let him try a marijuana.

The ex-Birmingham man admits he didn't see marijuana as being as harmful as other drugs, but trying it had an adverse effect on his health.

"I was never tempted to try drugs," Pennant writes. "Maybe it was because I saw the destruction they caused.

"No, I tried marijuana once. It was my dad who let me and I think he wanted to teach me a lesson.

"I didn't see marijuana as a harmful drug. The effects weren't the same as heroin or crack in the way they destroyed his life.

"I'm not condoning marijuana, because it's illegal. But it felt different.

Jermaine Pennant exclusive: My dad took my 14th birthday money to buy drugs and called me stupid when I cried

"Within a few minutes I remember throwing up everywhere. I was so sick.

"My dad was p***ing himself laughing and his words were: 'That'll teach you a lesson.' It bloody did! I was 12. Since then, I was never tempted."
