Jerde-Designed Beursplein Receives Decade Award from AIA/LA.
Created by the AIA/LA to celebrate 10 years of Los Angeles architecture, the Decade Awards were open to projects that had previously won an AIA/LA design award since January 1996. Beursplein received a merit award for urban design in 1997, one of five awards bestowed on the project following its debut in August 1996.
"When we were designing Beursplein, we knew it was a special project that would make a great contribution to the wonderful city and people of Rotterdam," said David Rogers, a partner of The Jerde Partnership and lead designer of the project. "I am honored it has received this award 10 years after opening."
Jerde designed Beursplein to revitalize Rotterdam's urban core, which had never fully recovered from the destruction of World War II. In collaboration with Dutch architects T+T Design and de Architecten Cie, Jerde devised an innovative planning solution to reconnect the city center with a below-grade promenade that provided safe pedestrian access beneath the city's busiest traffic thoroughfare. By linking the Hoogstraat and Lijnbaan districts with the promenade, the solution re-energized the struggling markets and breathed new life into the city. Combined with a 30-story residential tower, specialty retail gallery and metro station, Beursplein reinvented Rotterdam into a vibrant and engaging environment for residents and visitors. Following its opening, local media reported Beursplein attracted 500,000 visitors in its first two days.
Since Beursplein, the firm's first venture in Europe, Jerde-designed projects have opened throughout Europe in Athens, Budapest, Glasgow, Birmingham, UK, and Enschede, Netherlands. Just last week, Jerde-designed Kanyon opened in the Levent district of Istanbul. Zlote Tarasy, a mixed-use project designed by the firm in Warsaw's urban core, is expected to open in November. The firm is currently working in Amsterdam, Berlin, Kiev and the United Kingdom.
