Jealous rival held after horrific paint thinner attack.
Soteris Sofroniou was attacked by a 19-year-old man on Sunday afternoon after they had words over "personal differences" involving a girl.
The incident occurred at around 4.15pm on Panayias Pallouros Street in Geri.
The 19-year-old had telephoned Sofroniou and asked him to come round to his house to discuss their 'personal differences'.
The older boy and teenager allegedly started arguing because the 19-year-old was jealous about the 22-year-old's interest in a certain girl.
"He said why are you speaking to the girls I speak to," Sofroniou's father told reporters.
"He then said do you know what I'm holding and poured it all over him," he added.
According to police, the 19-year-old was holding a bottle of paint thinner which he proceeded to throw over the 22-year-old, burning his face, arms, chest and back.
The older man ran from his attacker and knocked on a neighbour's door calling for help.
The victim's father said he spoke to his son on the phone as the neighbour rushed his son to Nicosia General Hospital.
"He was with me at home and then he got a phone call. A quarter of an hour later he called me saying he'd been burnt. I asked him who by and he said some scum," he said.
In the meantime, the 19-year-old fled the scene. He was arrested an hour later about 1.5km away, police said.
According to reports, the teenager asked after the older man's health and confessed to the attack. He then told police he was unwell and had to be admitted to hospital.
It is thought the 19-year-old attacker will be remanded when he is discharged.
Sofroniou was yesterday admitted to the plastic surgery unit, police said.
His condition is serious, but out of danger.
