Jasper F. Frand, 70, dies, with Helmsley for 43 years

Jasper F. Frand, 70, a senior vice president of HelmsleySpear, Inc., died of cancer on July 16, at his home in Scarsdale. Frand, who was known as Jay, joined Helmsley while he was still in college 43 years ago.

Frand's impressive career includes many years as chief retail broker for Parkchester where he was responsible for bringing Macy's and Fresh Meadows, where he was a general partner. The development of Hastings-on-Hudson's waterfront including the Anaconda facility was an example of his visionary capabilities. He was also instrumental in the development of Frenchman's Creek in Palm Beach as well as the sale of the st. Moritz Hotel and Fuller Building in New York.

"Jay was a truly a professional as evidenced in his long and successful career," said D. Kenneth Patton, senior vice president and director of Operations at Helmsley-Spear, Inc. "We will miss him both as a colleague and friend."

Frand was well known throughout New York's real estate community. He used his substantial experience in the industry as a teacher at his alma mater, City College of New York, for 17 years. He also taught real estate courses at Cornell University for a decade.

Frand entered the U.S. Air Force in 1942 and served as a first lieutenant, navigator and bombadier in the Japanese theatre. He flew 31 missions in the 20th Air Force 73rd Wing including the first raid over Tokyo. His final flight was a reconnaissance mission over Nagasaki in June of 1945. Mr. Frand was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross twice as well as the Air Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters.

He is survived by his wife, the former Lucille Spigel; a daughter Deni Frand of Manhattan, who is married to New York City Commissioner of Consumer Affairs Mark Green; Nina Frand of Manhattan, who is married to artist Giancarlo Impiglia; Erica Frand of Los Angeles, who is married to computer program executive Michael Nevler; and seven grandchildren.
