A group of activists have completed a recreation of the famous 1936 Jarrow March for Jobs.

Hundreds of supporters gathered to join dozens of marchers, who from October 1 have been travelling on foot from the North East to London, where a rally was held at Temple and in Trafalgar Square.

The campaigners made the 330-mile trek to highlight that Government cuts "effected everyone apart from the rich".

The marchers, organised by Youth Fight for Jobs, handed in a petition to Downing Street, demanding a huge boost to apprenticeships, the reinstatement of Education Maintenance Allowances, reforms to tuition fees and the reopening of youth centres.

One of the marchers, Lizi Grey, was inspired by her great-grandfather Michael McLoughlin, who took part in the original march 75 years ago.

The 17-year-old college student from Gateshead said: "The stories I've heard from his son - my grandfather - were that they were very well received in all of the towns that they went to, and we have had the same experience.

"I think a lot of that is to do with communities feeling that the cuts are starting to bite and it's affecting everyone apart from the rich and the people making the decisions."
