Jaquet Droz limited-edition watch launched for Oman.

Jaquet Droz, a Swiss company famous for one-off watches, recently chose the sultanate as an exclusive location to launch an eight-piece limited-edition watch, primarily due to the high demand for its watches in the country.

The company has made limited-edition watches in the past, but never exclusively for a country or a retailer.

The watch, named 'Black Magic', was designed by both Dharmesh Khimji and Jaquet Droz, and has already sold out from the Mistal showroom. Inspired by Bahla, which is seen as a centre of black magic and accordingly has inspired many stories and legends, the watch has the words 'Black Magic for Mistal' engraved on the back. It is a gentleman's watch, made of black steel.

There is a demand for high-end products within the sultanate and people are leaning more towards unique luxury items, explained Dharmesh Khimji, managing director of operations of the Ajit Khimji Group. This demand for luxury goods indicates that

the country is doing well as compared to others which are struggling due to the global financial crisis.

Ganesh J Sundararaman, business head with Buzzword Action, a public relations firm, agreed. "Everything I have read so far has indicated that the world economy will swing up from September 2009 onwards. There is likely to be an improvement in the fourth quarter for most businesses," he said.

"At night, the tips of the hands will be luminous," said Dharmesh Khimji of the watch prior to the launch. "Even the customers who have bought this watch haven't seen it." This, they believe, turns the watch from a regular product into a special one - one that sold out even before it was launched. Customers were unable to view the watch until its launch date on October 13.
