Japanese int'l defender Soma named Asian MVP for June.

TOKYO, July 27 Kyodo

Japanese international defender Naoki Soma has been named Asian player of the month for June by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), Japanese soccer officials said Monday.

The 27-year-old Soma, who plays for J-League club Kashima Antlers, was cited for his performance as a left back in the first-round matches of the World Cup finals in France.

Soma is the seventh Japanese player to be selected as the Asian monthly MVP following international striker Masashi Nakayama who was the AFC pick for April.

''I'm very honored to get such an award. I want to make this a source of encouragement for the rest of the first-stage matches in the J-League schedule since we want to win the championship,'' Soma said.
