Anwar Feroz, M.Sc., group director of Janssen's ElderCare/Long-Term Care Group, will present the awards to this year's recipients on Tuesday, June 25, at 5:30 p.m. in the Grand Ballroom of the Disneyland Hotel, immediately prior to the "Progress in Mental Illness 2002: Advances in Psychotherapeutics for the Elderly" dinner symposium. This is the third year that the Janssen ElderCare Lifetime Achievement Awards, sponsored by Janssen Pharmaceutica Products, L.P., are being presented. Janssen initiated this award as a way to encourage and recognize advances in geriatric healthcare.

Through her presentations and publications, Dr. Plein has educated thousands of healthcare professionals about administering appropriate, effective and safe medications, as well as their responsibility in seeing that medications are used correctly.

In addition to being a Professor of Pharmacy, she continues her efforts toward the improvement of geriatric pharmacy education as Coordinator of the Certificate Program in Geriatric Pharmacy Practice and Principal Preceptor of the Hearthstone Specialized Residency in Geriatric Pharmacy at the University of Washington.

Dr. Shirley S. Travis began her career in healthcare more than twenty-five years ago as a nurse. As her career and education progressed, her passion for improving eldercare led her to earn a Ph.D. in Family Studies/Gerontology.

Since then, Dr. Travis has actively promoted quality care for the elderly by educating nurses about the many diverse aspects of eldercare, including nutrition, medications, family caregivers, advocacy, geriatric trauma and more. Her contributions to geriatric literature are included in Chronic Illness: Impact and Interventions, NGNA Core Curriculum for Gerontological Nursing, Handbook for Care of the Older Adult with Cancer, NGNA Core Curriculum for Gerontological Advanced Practice Nurses, and numerous other texts and journals.
