Jankovic too hot for Coco; SPORT IN BRIEF.

TENNIS: Jelena Jankovic defeated Coco Vandeweghe 6-2 6-1 to stay on course for a successful defence of her BNP Paribas Open title.

The former world number one - currently ranked number six - is bidding to become the only woman to win at Indian Wells two years in a row since Martina Navratilova completed the feat in 1991.

Australian Open winner Kim Clijsters, a two-time former Indian Wells champion, needed just 51 minutes to come through against Alla Kudryavtseva 6-2 6-0. Elsewhere in the second round there were wins for Vera Zvonareva, Francesca Schiavone, Marion Bartoli, Sara Errani, Yanina Wickmayer, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, Alize Cornet and Barbora Zahlavova Strycova.

In the men's event, France's Julien Benneteau beat Feliciano Lopez 6-4 6-4 to reach the second round, where he was joined by Milos Raonic, Pablo Cuevas, Ricardo Mello, Ryan Harrison, Philipp Petzschner, Santiago Giraldo, Benjamin Becker, Florent Serra, Igor Andreev, Bernard Tomic and Lukasz Kubot.
