James D. Butler.

James D. Butler, an attorney with Arnold & Porter since 1986, announced that he is establishing a solo legal practice specializing in real estate, corporate, business and bankruptcy transactional matters, sports and entertainment law and the representation of trade associations. Butler also assists corporations and other businesses in managing the costs and overseeing the work of outside legal counsel.

A cum laude graduate of the University of Chicago Law School in 1985, Butler also holds a MS in Government from the London School of Economics (awarded with highest distinction in 1982). He received a BA from Colorado College, where he graduated summa cum laude in 1980. While in college, Butler was a semifinalist for both the Rhodes Scholarship and the Truman Congressional Scholarship. Prior to joining Arnold & Porter, Butler served as law clerk to Bernard M. Decker, senior judge for the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois (Chicago).

Butler's law practice encompasses a broad range of transactional matters, including real estate and other purchase/sale transactions, workouts, commercial leasing, secured debt financings, corpo rate and partnership organizations, securities offerings, dispute resolutions and general corporate and business counseling. Butler also specializes in sports and entertainment law, in the representation of trade associations and in assisting corporations and other businesses in managing the costs and overseeing the work of outside legal counsel.
