Jails' purge on 'smart' phone use; CRIMINALS.

PRISON bosses have been ordered to clamp down on inmates smuggling in Skype internet phones and smart mobiles to bypass signalblocking technology. Security and counter-terror units fear some convicts are promoting propaganda or running behind-bars drug rings, escape-planning or witness-tampering from their cells via the devices.

Traditional call signals were barred to stop such empires operating after illicit mobiles in jails hit record levels - with one in 10 lags having access to a phone.

But Skype and smart phone technology now lets them carry on business as usual.

A source said: "The problem is the criminals are always one step ahead of the law. If we come up with a barrier they find a way round it."
