Jail for mindless street brawler.

A JUDGE yesterday jailed a street brawler saying it was time to "redress the balance" between thugs and decent members of society.

Judge Graham Cottle told 23-year-old Simon Butlin: "Mindless and senseless violence has turned town and city centres into no-go areas for ordinary decent citizens who are afraid to go out at night.

"It is time for the pendulum to begin to swing the other way. It is time to redress the balance, and the message will go out from the courts that prison sentences for those involved in routine street violence will contain a deterrent element."

Butlin, of Ellacombe Road, Torquay, pleaded guilty at Exeter Crown Court to causing grievous bodily harm to Keith Floyd and was jailed for 30 months.

The victim, Mr Floyd, from Newton Abbot, Devon, had been out at a fancy dress party and was dressed as "Dr Scrubs," said prosecutor Carla Grant.

He went over to another group and asked "does anyone need a doctor?"

Mr Floyd was attacked by a man and Butlin tried to act as a peacemaker - but he then lost patience and punched Mr Floyd so hard he fractured a facial bone, which needed an operation.
