Jackson talks about beer history.

Internationally-renowned beer expert Michael Jackson will conduct tutored tastings of beers from around the world -- including a recreation of ancient Mesopotamiam beer based upon information derived from ancient texts when The University Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, University of Pennsylvania, presents a program called "Historically Drinking: Beers Past and Present" on March 21.

The two-hour event will feature tutored and non-tutored tastings accompanied by international foods, as well as a provocative historical perspective on the origins of beer, presented by Dr. Patrick McGovern a University Museum archaeological researcher.

McGovern recently received international attention when he and fellow researcher announced the discovery of the first chemical confirmation of beer, dating from about 3500 B.C., in Iran.

Following that presentation, Jackson will offer tutored tastings of 10 personally selected international beers made from a variety of grains -- including rye, wheat, oatmeal, and wild yeast -- as he traces a broad history of beer.

A featured beer will be Ninkasi, a limited-edition brew developed by Anchor Brewing Co. of San Francisco. The beer was made using ingredients and a brewing descriptions from a 4,000 year old Sumerian hymn to Ninkasi, goddess of beer. Anchor President Fritz Maytag will be on hand to explain the Sumerian Beer Project that he and his brewery have been engaged in since 1988.

Tickets to the event are $25. For more information, call the Museum's Special Events Office at (215) 898-4890.
