Jack bats for Malawi.

FIRST Minister Jack McConnell stepped in to ensure a charity working in Malawi get cash to expand their operations.

Scottish International Relief can feed 45,000 kids a day under their free school meals scheme The First Minister praised the Mary's Meals scheme - but their application for cash from the Executive's International Development Fund was rejected.

Now McConnell has instructed officials to work with the charity to see the application is reviewed.

A spokesman for the First Minister said SIR would receive Executive funding in the near future.

He added: "The First Minister has seen the wonderful work Mary's Meals do in Malawi.

"He has made it absolutely clear to those processing bids for the IDF that they must work with the charity as a matter of urgency to ensure that funding can be made available to them."

SIR's Ruth Black said: "We'd be more than willing to meet and discuss our proposal again
