TRIPOLI, Lebanon: A man from Tripoli's Jabal Mohsen neighborhood was shot and wounded in broad daylight Thursday.
Khodr Abbas, a member of the Alawite sect who resides in the impoverished area, was shot on Syria Street in the neighborhood of Bab al-Tabbaneh and was transferred to a nearby hospital.
The Lebanese Army cordoned off the area where Abbas was shot and was reportedly in pursuit of the assailants.
The Alawite community of Lebanon, which is centered in the northern city, has in recent weeks been the target of several sectarian attacks.
Thursday's shooting came days after a Human Rights Watch said Alawites are "particularly vulnerable" to sectarian attacks in Tripoli and the Lebanese government must do more protect them.
Also Thursday, a rocket-propelled grenade landed close to an Army checkpoint in the area of Barad al-Bisar in the Zahrieh neighborhood and wounded Corp.
Sleiman Qassem, conscript Mounir Awad, and civilians Bassam Faisal and Syrian Malik Ali. The Army located the source of the grenade and was investigating the situation. Another grenade was also tossed in the area.
