JWV LEADER CONDEMNS RISE OF NEO-NAZISM ON PUBLIC AIRWAYS

WASHINGTON, Oct. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- "The proliferation of neo-nazism, racism and virulent anti-Semitism over public airways, is repulsive to a civilized society and must be curtailed," forcefully declared Edward D. Blatt, national commander of the Jewish War Veterans of the U.S.A. (JWV).
The commander's comments follow a report that hate groups in America are now openly using cable television, computers, the phone system and other electronic mediums to recruit members and vent their views. "This disturbing trend endangers our whole society," Blatt said. "Unmonitored hate programming can have severe consequences on this nation and only heighten tensions between religions and races."
The commander noted that in his home city of Philadelphia, the United States Nationalist Party, a white separatist group, has access to four automated dialing lines that call numbers. Furthermore, Blatt noted, the group keeps in touch with other hate groups through a computer network, NaziNet, a computer bulletin board for white supremacists and will have its own cable television public-access show in the Philadelphia area. "These groups are using electronic communications to reach troubled teen-agers, who in turn, are increasingly committing acts of anti-Semitism and hate violence," Blatt stated.
JWV calls on the government to impose restrictions on the use of these lines of communications for the purpose of furthering the agendas of hate groups. Additionally, the organization calls on the cable television, computer and telephone industries to place safeguards on the use of public airwaves by groups which promote anti-Semitism, racism, white supremacy and bigotry. "The directors of these industries have a responsibility to monitor the information emanating from their communication lines that are being passed along to the general public," Blatt said, "and must be made aware that they are endangering the welfare of the community by ignoring or refusing to cease the activities of those groups who use these mediums for their hate-filled agendas."
