JWP ENVIRO-GRO TECHNOLOGIES WINS BALTIMORE SLUDGE CONTRACT
PURCHASE, N.Y., Jan. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- JWP Enviro-Gro Technologies has been awarded a $34 million, 20-year contract to design, finance, build and operate a sewage sludge pelletization plant at the City of Baltimore's Black River Wastewater Treatment Plant.
The company's patented process was the city's top choice among competing sludge-management options, according to Baltimore Director of Public Works George Balog.
"Enviro-Gro's proposal received the most points from the panel of experts that reviewed possible options for our city," Balog said. JWP Enviro-Gro is the only company in the United States that has commercially proven and permitted pelletization technology.
Expected completion date for the JWP Enviro-Gro plant is July 1993, with full operation to begin in the fall of the same year. It will process 650,000 gallons of sludge per day into dry fertilizer pellets.
Most of Baltimore's sludge is currently applied directly to agricultural land. The city will continue to land-apply about one-fourth of the total volume, a portion will go to sludge drying and composting, while the remainder will go to the JWP Enviro-Gro pelletization plant, according to Balog.
JWP Enviro-Gro, the leading multi-service sludge management firm in the U.S., already has six pelletization plants in operation around the country. These range in size from a facility in Hagerstown, Md., that processes 6 tons per day, to a Boston Harbor plant with the capacity to produce 164 dry tons of sludge pellets per day. The company has recently won three more municipal contracts, including one for a plant that will process about half of New York City's sewage sludge.
"An increasing number of municipalities have been turning to us for sludge management solutions because we have the most experience in this business," said JWP Enviro-Gro Technologies CEO Alfred Tyler.
Tyler said pelletization is an attractive option for both small and large cities, especially those being forced to stop ocean dumping or landfilling of sludge. Federal mandate banned ocean dumping nationally as of Dec. 31, 1991. Landfill capacity is dwindling, and new regulations are making landfills more expensive to build and maintain.
Pelletization offers both economic and environmental benefits. JWP Enviro-Gro's patented ESP system greatly reduces the volume of sludge to be managed while producing a nutrient-rich product marketable to fertilizer companies at up to $110 per dry ton. And sludge pelletization is promoted by the EPA as a "beneficial use" that protects both public health and the environment.
JWP Enviro-Gro's patented process uses rotary dryers to dry sewage sludge to about 5 percent water content and form it into uniform, small pellets that are easily stored, shipped and blended with commercial fertilizers.
In addition to pelletization, JWP Enviro-Gro offers a full range of sewage sludge management options, including land application, dewatering and composting. "We work out the 'best fit,' most cost-effective management plan for each situation," notes Tyler.
JWP Enviro-Gro is part of the Energy and Environment Group of JWP Inc. (NYSE: JWP), the world's leading technical services company. The JWP Energy and Environment Group solves complex energy and environmental problems for government and industry. In addition to sludge processing, specialty areas include cogeneration, waste-to- energy, air pollution systems, recycling and composting.
