America's Fifth Broadcast Network Selects JVC's Professional Level

D-VHS Technology for the Screening of High Definition Content

JVC PROFESSIONAL PRODUCTS COMPANY today announced that The WB network has selected the JVC Pro-HD system to standardize screening of high definition (HD) content for their in-house operating facilities and 130 US affiliates. The WB needed an affordable and secure way to screen high definition content, and JVC's Pro-HD system provides a simple, economical, three-component professional system with an HD MPEG-2 encoder, mastering recorder and playback VCR.

JVC's high definition delivery system is an ideal method for The WB affiliates to screen HD materials in their local facilities on a low-cost D-VHS media. Warner Brothers Studios, the sister company of The WB network, purchased the JVC Pro-HD delivery system at the end of 2002 for screening major motion pictures. This represents a further step to equip the Warner properties with professional HD solutions.

"The WB was looking for an affordable system to screen high definition content in their affiliate locations. Current solutions proved too costly and stations often had to rely on showing advertisers down-converted copies of their programs. JVC solved this problem for us," said Harold Protter, Senior Vice President, Technology, at the WB. "We were impressed with the complete functionality of JVC's Pro-HD system, which is a powerful and affordable system for affiliates that enables them to screen future broadcasts for advertisers in high quality high definition. In addition, we wanted to capitalize on the cutting-edge high definition broadcasting that our savvy audience wants. "

The JVC Pro HD system is a complete turnkey solution that includes the DM-JV600 encoder, which takes SMPTE-292M HD-SDI signal and encodes it into a compressed HD MPEG2 format, ideal for mastering Pro-HD content as well as digital HD terrestrial and satellite broadcasting. The unique SR-VDA300US D-VHS 25 mbps bit stream mastering recorder creates HD recordings with remarkable accuracy, nearly indistinguishable from the original digital content. The SR-VDA300US accepts the native DVB-ASI data stream directly from any HD MPEG-2 encoder conforming to ASI standards and required data rates. Rounding out the Pro-HD system is the SR-VD400US player featuring economical distribution playback of Pro-HD original recordings in the D-VHS and password-protected modes.

"It's an enormous validation of the quality and appeal of JVC's Pro-HD technology that a major broadcaster such as The WB network has chosen it as the standard they will use for day-in, day-out screening of HD content," said Lawrence Librach, Assistant Vice President of Business Development Broadcast and Entertainment of JVC PROFESSIONAL PRODUCTS COMPANY. "JVC's is the first and only format that provides an affordable solution with password-protection for HD playback and the only company in the world that can provide an under one-thousand dollar deck with HD picture quality. This system will be an important tool for The WB's affiliates who can pre-screen broadcasts of the network's lineup of programs in high definition."

The WB's adoption of Pro-HD underscores JVC's strategy for developing affordable HD commercial applications that can be easily employed across numerous industries including filmmaking, broadcast, medical, retail display and more.
