JUST GETTING STARTED OR GEARING UP FOR GROWTH: AMERITECH WORK-AT-HOME CENTERS CAN HELP

 DETROIT, Aug. 31 /PRNewswire/ -- For a growing number of Americans, working at home has become either a new option or a necessity. On the "plus" side, it offers flexibility, convenience and increased productivity.
 The downside's there, too: not knowing when to call it a day, feeling isolated, or not having the right communications gear to make the home office work for you.
 Enter Ameritech's five Work-at-Home Centers in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio and Wisconsin. Staffed by a team of trained home office specialists, the centers operate Monday through Friday.
 "We offer free literature that can help you get organized or provide recommendations about specific services or types of equipment," said Valerie O'Connor, Ameritech Work-at-Home market manager.
 O'Connor said Ameritech's home office specialists can answer questions, make suggestions and arrange for installation of any Ameritech service -- from a second line to custom services.
 "For home-based business people, telephone services like voice mail, three-way calling, call forwarding, and lines for fax machines and computer modems are invaluable tools that can mean increased business and greater efficiency," O'Connor said.
 Ameritech created the centers because working at home, full- and part-time, is a burgeoning national trend. Studies show the work-at- home workforce is expanding eight times faster than the total U.S. labor market.
 In the five states served by Ameritech, about one in three households includes a homeworker. The group includes self-employed people, telecommuters, free-lancers and "briefcase" workers who take job tasks home.
 Publications available from the centers include: "The Home Office Resource Guide," "The Home Office Modem Reference Manual," "The Home Office FAX" booklet and the bi-monthly "Work-at-Home Newsletter."
 The publications are available by calling one of the Work-at-Home Centers or by calling the toll-free, automated Work-at-Home Infoline on 1-800-447-3021.
 The toll-free (from in-state) numbers for the Work-at-Home Centers are:
 Illinois -- 1-800-232-0285;
 Indiana -- 556-HOME (4663);
 Michigan -- 221-4000;
 Ohio -- 1-800-553-5772; and
 Wisconsin -- 1-800-924-8990
 Based in Chicago, Ameritech is a leading supplier of full-service communications and advanced information services, primarily to about 12 million customers in the Midwest. It also has operations in New Zealand, Poland and other international areas. Its 1992 revenues were $11.2 billion.
