JUST BRING ON THE BRANSON.

CARDIFF'S former World Coarse Fishing Champion Clive Branson is back on the winning trail and completed a highly successful week's fishing which started with second place in the Cardiff Nomads Tuesday evening match at Seven Oaks Fishery.

Carp made the running and Clive put together a 29lb bag but was way behind winner Doug Hornblow, from Tonypandy, who put a massive 72lb catch on the scales at the end of just three hours fishing.

Mike Eyres was third with 24lb. This was the last of the club's league matches and the series winner was Gary Swaine with Mike Eyres runner-up.

The next evening was the Lamby Pond Open and Clive, from Ely, pole-fished casters to win with an excellent 11lb 11oz roach bag in the three-hour match.

Saturday found him at Evesham for the John Smiths qualifier on the River Avon where he outfished a strong Midland field to win with a chub catch of 7lb 15oz taken on waggler and maggot.

Clive now goes through to the prestigious final at Evesham over the August Bank Holiday weekend.

To wrap up the week's good results he was a section winner and fifth overall in the Gwent League match at Peterstone with 9 5lb of small rudd.

The 2002 Gwent Clubs League kicked off at Peterstone Fishery and Cardiff Nomads A Team and New Inn Nobblers A team tied for first place when both four-man squads collected eight penalty points.

Newport OAP were third with 13 points and Cardiff Nomads B fourth with 15.5 points.

Tiny rudd made up most of the catches and Canton plumber Richard Candy, of the Cardiff Nomads A Team, caught around 600 along with a couple of bonus bream to top the individual weights with 11lb 13oz.

Martyn Challenger, of New Inn Nobblers A team, had 11lb 6oz of rudd for second place and Clive Roberts, of Cardiff Nomads, was third with 10lb 12oz.

Fish of the match was the 4lb bream that helped Mike Eyres, of Cardiff Nomads B, to fourth place with 10lb 2oz.

The carp obliged when Newport AA travelled to Staunton Court for their club match and winner Gary Fisher steered fish to 6lb to the net for a total of 64lb 9oz.

Gerry Lock was second with 57lb 6oz and Shaun Ballett third with 56lb 7oz.
