JURY FINDS WANG PATENT VALID
LOWELL, Mass., Feb. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Wang Laboratories, Inc. (AMEX: WAN) announced today that a U.S. District Court jury in Boston returned a verdict against CFR Associates, Inc. and in favor of Wang.
The jury found that Wang's distributed data processing system patent is valid and that CFR had infringed the Wang patent. The jury deliberated for two days after hearing evidence in the trial, which began on Dec. 9, 1991. The lawsuit against CFR was initiated by Wang in 1987.
The jury determined that CFR, a Haverhill, Mass., corporation whose principal owner is Charles V.F. Rogers of Newton, N.H., infringed the Wang patent by manufacturing and selling CFR's "Printlink" device. This product allows printers manufactured by other companies to operate on Wang's VS family of mid-range systems.
Prior to the jury's findings, the court had entered additional orders against CFR dismissing nine separate counterclaims brought by CFR against Wang.
Edward D. Grayson, Wang senior vice president and general counsel, said, "During the course of this litigation, CFR and its president, Charles Rogers, have issued numerous statements claiming that Wang would lose the trial and suffer significant damages at the hands of CFR and others. The Federal Court verdict confirms Wang's assertions that CFR acted in violation of the company's patent rights."
The trial will now continue to determine the dollar amount that CFR owes Wang in damages. Wang is also requesting preliminary and permanent injunctions prohibiting CFR from further infringing Wang's patent.
