JUNKIES TO GET BOOT.

POLICE have been given new powers to clear drug addicts, drunks and beggars from a major tourist attraction.

The crackdown in Hunter Square in Edinburgh's Royal Mile will run until August 31, covering the main tourist season and the Edinburgh Festival.

A previous dispersal order ran out on January 31 and was hailed as a success in cleaning up the area. But drunks and junkies have started drifting back and the level of violence and abuse has risen again.

Now the council have granted police renewed powers and those causing trouble will be told to move on or be arrested.

Supt Cliff Anderson said: "The antisocial behaviour problem in Hunter Square has escalated since the spring."
