JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENT HONORS SCE'S BRYSON WITH 'SPIRIT' AWARD
LOS ANGELES, Nov. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- In a celebration of youth "working together," John E. Bryson, Southern California Edison's chairman and chief executive officer, yesterday accepted Junior Achievement of Southern California's Spirit of Achievement award from Los Angeles Mayor Tom Bradley.
The presentation was part of the 1992 Junior Achievement Tribute Dinner at the Regent Beverly Wilshire Hotel, Beverly Hills.
"We incorporated this year's theme for Junior Achievement, 'Working Together,' into tonight's program," Allen Kirtley, president of Junior Achievement of Southern California, said. "It was an evening of working together to honor John Bryson for helping to rebuild L.A."
The entertainment -- professional-quality music and dancing by extraordinarily talented young performers -- reflected the theme, as did the awards to sponsors -- artworks created by teams of children in classrooms throughout the Los Angeles area.
Bradley's remarks noted Bryson's lifetime of leadership, especially his contributions to rebuilding Los Angeles. "He has always harnessed his leadership for larger causes that provide benefit for others," Bradley said of Bryson in presenting the award.
In accepting the award, Bryson praised the Junior Achievement program, in which young people learn how business operates by establishing and running business ventures with help from adults.
"Junior Achievement plays an important role in helping us create a brighter tomorrow for Los Angeles," Bryson said. "To the extent that our youth can learn and come together, our future will be better."
Bradley noted that Bryson was one of the founders of the Natural Resources Defense Council, and mentioned Bryson's accomplishments as chair of both the state Water Resources Control Board and the California Public Utilities Commission before he joined Edison in 1984.
As Edison's chairman and chief executive officer, Bradley said, Bryson spurred the company to be among the first to dedicate resources to addressing problems that led to last April's civil unrest, committing $35 million in cash, material and services over five years.
In addition, Bryson led the effort that is bringing the final game of the 1994 World Cup Soccer tourney -- the world's most-watched sporting event -- to Los Angeles.
Bradley also cited Edison's leadership in the effort to keep businesses in California. Edison, Bradley said, "has played a major role in retention of many jobs in Southern California."
Bryson praised Bradley as he accepted the award. As Southern California is re-invented, Bryson said, "we look to our leaders for direction. Tom, your own leadership has been an inspiration to many, including myself."
Before the presentation, the audience was introduced to Bryson in a video program introduced by John Gavin, former ambassador to Mexico.
