JUNE SALES INCREASE 8.4 PERCENT FOR

 ST. LOUIS, July 8 /PRNewswire/ -- The May Department Stores Company (NYSE: MA) today reported preliminary sales of $972.9 million for the five-week period ended July 3, an 8.4 percent increase over $897.2 million in the similar year-ago period.
 Sales for the first five months of fiscal 1993 were $4.12 billion, up 6.4 percent from sales of $3.87 billion during the same period a year ago.
 Department store sales for June totaled $775.2 million, up 7.3 percent or $52.4 million from last year. Sales for Payless ShoeSource were $197.7 million, an increase of 13.3 percent or $23.3 million from last year's similar period.

 Sales have been restated to exclude the sales of stores which have been closed and not replaced. Year-to-date revenues, including sales of nonreplaced closed stores and finance charge revenue, were $4.29 billion in 1993 and $4.18 billion in 1992.
 The May Department Stores Company is the largest department store retailer in the United States, operating 302 department stores and 3,622 Payless ShoeSource stores.
 (A) Store-for-store sales represent sales of those stores open during both years.
