JUNE SALES INCREASE 8.0 PERCENT FOR THE MAY DEPARTMENT STORES COMPANY
 ST. LOUIS, July 9 /PRNewswire/ -- The May Department Stores Company (NYSE: MA) today reported preliminary sales of $932.7 million for the five-week period ended July 4, an increase of 8.0 percent from sales of $863.9 million during the similar period a year ago.
 Sales for the first five months of fiscal 1992 were $4.03 billion, up 6.4 percent from sales of $3.79 billion in the same period last year.
 Department store sales for June totaled $758.2 million, up 7.0 percent or $49.9 million from last year. Sales for Payless ShoeSource were $174.5 million, an increase of 12.1 percent or $18.9 million.

 (A): Store-for-store sales represent sales of those stores open
 during both years.
 Sales have been restated to exclude the sales of stores which have been closed and not replaced. Year-to-date revenues, including sales of nonreplaced closed stores and finance charge revenue, were $4.18 billion in 1992 and $4.04 billion in 1991.
 The May Department Stores Company is the largest department store retailer in the United States, operating 318 department stores and 3,355 Payless ShoeSource stores.
