JUDGE OVERRULES UTAH JURY VERDICT, FINDS IN FAVOR OF TEXACO

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y., Sept. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Texaco Inc. (NYSE: TX) announced today that Judge Frank G. Noel of the Third Judicial District Court, Tooele County, Utah overturned a jury's verdict of Friday, Sept. 3, which had awarded Gold Standard, Inc. damages in the amount of $154 million compensatory damages and $250 million punitive damages.
Judge Noel granted Texaco's motion for a directed verdict in favor of the two Texaco subsidiaries, Getty Oil Company and Getty Mining Company, in the case brought by Gold Standard.
The case arose from a 1973 mining venture between Getty and Gold Standard, in which Getty held a 75-percent interest and Gold Standard held a 25-percent participating interest. The venture involved the Mercur gold mine and milling complex in Tooele and Utah counties in Utah, near Salt Lake City. Texaco acquired Getty in 1984 and sold Getty's interest in the mine in 1985.
