JOY TECHNOLOGIES INC. REPORTS STRIKE AT ITS MANUFACTURING FACILITIES IN FRANKLIN, PENNSYLVANIA

PITTSBURGH, Nov. 20 ~PRNewswire~ -- Joy Technologies Inc. (NYSE: JOY) today reported that as of 12:01 a.m. on Nov. 20, 1992, the International Association of Machinists Union Local 1842 went on strike at the main manufacturing facilities for Joy's Mining Machinery division in Franklin, Pa. Approximately 620 hourly production and maintenance personnel are on strike, out of a total workforce at the location of about 1,000 persons. The strike does not affect Joy's businesses other than Mining Machinery.
The strike followed unsuccessful negotiations with union representatives. The local union membership voted to reject Joy's final offer for a proposed new three-year agreement. The unresolved issues include wages and health care benefits, and no further meetings have been scheduled at this time.
According to John Hanson, president of the Joy Mining Machinery Division, "Joy believes it will be able to meet anticipated customer requirements for spare parts and machine rebuilds and a significant portion, if not all, of their needs for new equipment. The strike is expected to defer shipments and revenues from new continuous miners from the third quarter ending Nov. 27, 1992 to the fourth quarter." A company official added that "A prolonged strike could have a negative impact on financial results for the fourth fiscal quarter and beyond."
Joy Technologies Inc. is a leader in the worldwide manufacturing and servicing of mining equipment for the underground extraction of coal and other bedded materials. The company is also a large supplier of air pollution and ash-handling equipment for use by utilities and other industrial operations.
