JOY TECHNOLOGIES INC. ELECTS NEW PRESIDENT AND COO

 PITTSBURGH, Nov. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- The board of directors of Joy Technologies Inc. (NYSE: JOY) today elected John Nils Hanson president and chief operating officer and a member of the board of directors. Hanson has served as senior vice president of the corporation, as well as president of the Mining Machinery Division since he joined the company in January 1990.
 Hanson will continue to lead the Mining Machinery Division reporting to Marc F. Wray, chairman of the board and chief executive officer of the company.
 "I am confident that John will provide the same quality leadership to the total Joy enterprise that he has in developing and implementing an expanded global strategy for the Mining Machinery Division," Wray said.
 Before joining Joy Technologies, Hanson worked for Caterpillar Inc. nine years, serving in a variety of management positions. He joined Caterpillar in 1981 as a vice president and president of the company's Solar Turbines Inc. subsidiary. In 1987, he assumed responsibility for global marketing, a position he held until joining Joy Technologies.
 Earlier, Hanson was appointed a White House Fellow serving as executive assistant to the secretary of labor.
 Hanson received a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering in 1964 and a master's degree in nuclear engineering in 1965, both from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He earned a doctorate in nuclear science and engineering from Carnegie Mellon University in 1969.
 Joy Technologies Inc. manufactures and services mining equipment for the extraction of coal and other bedded minerals. The company is also a supplier of air pollution and ash handling equipment used for utilities and other industrial operations.
 The company's fiscal 1993 net sales were $581 million.
