JOURNEY'S END RESORT IN BELIZE TO HOST MAJOR ANTI-DRUG SUMMIT

AMBERGRIS CAYE, Belize, Feb. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- In February, seven Central American heads of state will meet at Journey's End Caribbean Club Resort on Ambergris Caye off the coast of Belize for the first Central American Anti-Drug Summit. As the guests of Belizean Prime Minister George Price, summit participants will include: President Violetta Chamorro of Nicaragua, President Guillermo Endara of Panama, President Raphael Calderon-Fournier of Costa Rica, President Jorge Serrano Elias of Guatemala, President Alfredo Cristianni of El Salvador and President Rafael Leonardo Callegas of Honduras.
The conference will begin on Feb. 19 in Belmopan, the capital of Belize, and move to Journey's End Feb. 20-21 for informal chats, socializing and some presidential R&R. The small, ultra-exclusive resort was chosen because of its superior facilities and island location, which enhances privacy and security.
John and Jennie Rietz, the majority shareholders of Journey's End, built the resort in 1986 and operate it themselves. Celebrities are nothing new to the Rietzes. They've welcomed numerous public figures to their island paradise, including President Jimmy Carter, Sen. Edward Kennedy and many of Hollywood's biggest stars.
During the February anti-drug summit, Journey's End will accommodate a group of 150 dignitaries: the president of each participating country, his or her spouse, and each head of state's entourage of top- ranking aides.
The Journey's End staff of 125 has moved preparations for the summit into high gear. A welcoming banquet is planned for Saturday night, featuring the continental and Caribbean cuisine for which the resort's master chef, William Brinkly, is famous. And in classic Journey's End style, the state dinner will be served alfresco under the stars.
Still relatively unknown and completely unspoiled, Journey's End has been hailed by travel writers around the globe as one of the ultimate barefoot vacation resorts. Located on a lush, secluded 53-acre site, with only 72 guest rooms, cottages, villas and guest houses, Journey's End was designed to offer an idyllic refuge from the hustle and bustle of 20th century life. Said John Rietz, "Here, we give visitors the option of doing it all or doing nothing at all in total privacy and rustic, casual comfort."
Like all Journey's End guests, the heads of state will be invited to take advantage of the resort's superior land and water-sports facilities, from tennis, jogging, volleyball and basketball to scuba diving, snorkeling, deep sea, reef and tackle fishing, canoeing and windsurfing, with one-on-one instruction available in any sport. Or guests may choose to lounge on the beach or around the Olympic-size pool with swim-up bar, Jacuzzi, hot tub, table tennis and pool table.
"We're proud to have been selected as the site for this important conference," said John Rietz, "and equally proud to be the caliber of resort befitting guests of this stature."
