JOSTENS LEARNING TO OFFER PRIVATE LABEL HARDWARE PRODUCTS
SAN DIEGO, April 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Jostens Learning Corp. (JLC) the nation's leading developer of integrated educational curriculum software programs, has announced it will enter the computer hardware market this spring with MS-DOS compatible 386 and 486 microcomputers developed specifically for student and teacher use. The announcement was made by John Kernan, chairman and chief executive officer of the $160 million firm.
"Jostens Learning prides itself on being more than a provider of educational software. We are a true partner in the pursuit of educational advancement," said Kernan. "In this pursuit we continually ensure that our customers have access to the latest in software and hardware technology at an affordable cost. We are a full-service provider, and today's announcement continues our commitment to provide educational solutions."
"We're very excited about this new partnership and look forward to joining efforts with Jostens Learning to provide the educational community with an unbeatable educational computer package," said Dennis Jolly, vice president and general manager of Dell's government, education and medical operating division. "The Jostens Learning/Dell agreement not only provides educators with the best in educational software on industry-leading computer hardware, but includes the award- winning service and support necessary to fully implement these products as efficient teaching tools."
The new Jostens Learning 386 and 486 microcomputers are made in the United States by Dell Computer Corp. (NASDAQ: DELL), based in Austin, Texas. The machines will run all Jostens Learning software products made for the MS-DOS format and which currently run on computers from IBM(R) and Tandy(R). Jostens Learning programs are also available for use on computers from Apple(R). The new 386 and 486 machines will be available for delivery in May 1992.
"Concurrent with our goal of offering educators the most effective and comprehensive curricula, Jostens Learning has an outstanding track record in providing total technical and educational support services to users of all hardware platforms," said Proctor Houston, group vice president of sales at JLC. "We will continue to offer software updates, service and service to present customer configurations. Courseware planned for future release will be available on Apple, IBM and Tandy computers as well as our own."
A major feature of the new Jostens Learning hardware is its flexibility. It can handle up to 64 student stations from a single file server, and will work equally well in a classroom, laboratory and combined setting. The new machines can be added with ease to existing customers' IBM or Tandy configurations as student stations, and they are 100 percent MS-DOS compatible and capable of running third-party software. The JLC microcomputers can be upgraded to run the most advanced multimedia software.
"These high-performance machines provide everything educators need today, including the security of knowing that their future curriculum line up will continue to operate into the future," said Houston. "As hardware requirements continue to change, the Jostens Learning computer will meet those needs, including multimedia requirements."
As with all Jostens Learning products, a comprehensive on-site installation and support package will be offered with the hardware, including full set up; training for administrators, teachers and students; complete integration of the computers into the existing MS-DOS system; ongoing technical support; and a toll-free Helpline for operational questions. These features will make this one of the best- supported computers in the industry.
"Today's educators have a host of hardware choices which can be overwhelming. We have entered the hardware market to assist educators with curricular and technology decisions so that they can focus on the more important decisions of educating children," said Kernan. "Our hope is to continue to make these choices easier for educators, and therefore increase children's successes."
