JOSHUA I. SMITH, MAXIMA CHAIRMAN AND CEO, ELECTED TO CATERPILLAR BOARD

 PEORIA, Ill., Oct. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Joshua I. Smith, chairman and CEO of The MAXIMA Corporation, has been elected a director of Caterpillar Inc. (NYSE: CAT).
 Smith's 15-year-old, 700-plus employee firm provides computer systems and management information products and service. Based in Lanham, Md., and with offices in 14 states, MAXIMA specializes in records management and system integration, serving private-sector and federal, state, and local government clients.
 Smith serves on the Federal Communication Commission's Small Business Advisory Committee and the boards of Federal Express Corporation and Inland Steel Corporation. He was appointed by former President George Bush to the U.S. Commission on Minority Business Development, where he served as chairman. He also was appointed by Bush to the Executive Committee of the 1990 Economic Summit of Industrialized Nations and the Board of Trustees for The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.
 A graduate of Central State University, Wilberforce, Ohio, Smith has completed graduate courses in law and business management at the University of Akron and Central Michigan University, respectively. He has received the Man of Achievement Award from the Anti-Defamation League of B'Nai B'Rith and is chairman of the National Urban Coalition.
 His election increases the board of directors' membership to 13.
