JONES INTERCABLE CEO RESPONDS TO S.12 VETO OVERRIDE
ENGLEWOOD, Colo., Oct. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Glenn R. Jones, chief

executive officer of Jones Intercable Inc. (NASDAQ-NMS: JOIN and JOINA); Jones Spacelink Ltd. (NASDAQ: SPLKA); and Jones International Ltd. described the recent passage of a bill re-regulating cable television as "a disappointment," but maintained the bill was "one more change in a shifting landscape that we're well accustomed to."
Jones' complete remarks are as follows:
"We are obviously disappointed by the vote, but we are confident of our companies' ability to compete and continue to thrive in the new, regulated marketplace. As ill-advised as it may be, S.12 is now the law of the land, and we will make the best of it.
"It will be some time before the full impact of this legislation is felt. The Federal Communications Commission will need the six months allotted to it to establish the formulas and procedures under which cable rates will be regulated.
"Likewise, the constitutionality of a number of the bill's provisions will likely be challenged in court. We welcome a reasoned judicial review of this bill, free of the political maneuvering that resulted in its passage.
"It is important to note that under this legislation, the FCC will allow cable operators to pass on to our subscribers the cost of complying with the bill's many new requirements. Although the expense of regulation is now a reality, cost containment will be a very high priority. We will endeavor to do our utmost to minimize the impact to our customers. This effort may include providing A-B switches to our customers in markets where broadcasters demand payment from us for carriage of their signals.
"The Jones companies have built their outstanding national reputation by dealing effectively with change. The new legislation is one more change in a shifting landscape that we're well accustomed to. We will take it in stride, and continue to provide our customers with the very best cable television service available."
Jones International is the parent company of Jones Intercable and Jones Spacelink, which together are among the ten largest cable television operators in the United States.
