JOL: THAT WAS STUPID, BERBA.

FULHAM 1 SOTON 1 MARTIN JOL branded Dimitar Berbatov's T-shirt celebration "stupid" after Southampton snatched a point at Craven Cottage.

The Fulham striker scored on eight minutes then picked up a booking for taking off his shirt to reveal the handwritten message "keep calm and pass me the ball".

Angry Cottagers boss Jol actually agreed with the sentiment, encouraging the younger players not to panic as they hover above the drop zone after one win in 11 games. But he felt Berbatov was lucky to avoid a second yellow for a clumsy foul. He also labelled as stupid a Chris Baird handball which gifted Saints a late penalty equaliser.

Jol said: "I need to have a word with Berbatov, he was stupid. He probably thought he wouldn't get booked.

"It's not the brightest thing to do but he wanted to make a statement to the young guys to play with confidence and he is right as you need self-belief to play football."

He added: "It was also a stupid handball for the penalty."

Berbatov put Fulham ahead when Sascha Riether's cross was fumbled by keeper Kelvin Davis and the Bulgarian forced it home.

But the hosts failed to build on their good start and Berbatov was fortunate not to have been sent off for a late tackle on Jason Puncheon.

The longer the game went on the more you could feel the nerves creeping in and Saints' equaliser came six minutes from time.

Gaston Ramirez' corner caused havoc in the Fulham box and Baird handled. Rickie Lambert stepped up to level the score and earn a precious point for his side.
