JOHNSTON & MURPHY'S 1-800 ELECTION HOTLINE TO BARE CANDIDATES' SOLES ON THE CAMPAIGN TRAIL

JOHNSTON & MURPHY'S 1-800 ELECTION HOTLINE TO BARE
CANDIDATES' SOLES ON THE CAMPAIGN TRAIL
NASHVILLE, Tenn., Sept. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- While the traditional news media is covering the presidential candidates' personal lives, Johnston & Murphy Shoe Company is going one step further and covering the candidates' soles via a weekly report on a 1-800 number.
Beginning Monday, Sept. 14, Americans interested in the candidates' stance and missteps on the campaign trail can listen to the free, entertaining 2-minute weekly report by calling 1-800-758-SHOE.
Sample Johnston & Murphy 1-800 election hotline story:
"While cooling their heels on part two of their air-conditioned bus ride, Gore and Clinton are stopping daily to jog. Johnston & Murphy has noted they're running in the same brand of footwear that Dan and Dave wore while failing to bring home Olympic gold from Barcelona. Is this an indication of their campaign's footing? Or the beginning of a new ad campaign -- 'Bill and George. Who'll fill the President's shoes? To be settled in November.'"
The campaign trail reports will be updated weekly by the Johnston & Murphy Shoe Stringer. Bipartisan in nature, the Shoe Stringer stories will give equal treatment to every Al Gore side-step and Dan Quayle stumble. At the end of each report, listeners will be encouraged to leave their response to a weekly opinion poll. Called the S.H.O.E. poll, the unscientific opinion poll's acronym stands for Strategic Harassment Of Electorate. Results of each week's poll will be released in the next week's 1-800 message.
Sample opinion poll -- "In his recent acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention, President Bush commented that 'my opponent's campaign is being backed by practically every trial lawyer who ever wore a tasseled loafer.' Do you own a pair of tasseled loafers? Are you a trial lawyer?"
Why has Johnston & Murphy decided to take such a unique perspective from which to cover the presidential campaign?
"The purpose of our 1-800 election hotline is not to step on any one candidate's toes but to place additional attention on the presidential election in an entertaining way," said Kent Wall, president of the Nashville-based footwear manufacturer. "Our little series of campaign trail footnotes may inspire folks to find out what's afoot in the presidential elections, get involved, step up and be counted.
"Johnston & Murphy has crafted fine footwear for every U.S. president since Millard Fillmore in 1850, and we have a vested interest in who'll wear our shoes in '92."
The 1-800 Johnston & Murphy election hotline is being introduced nationally via Johnston & Murphy Shop displays, campaign buttons and flyers urging customers to "Get the Scoop on the Campaign Poop" and call 1-800-758-SHOE. Messages on the Johnston & Murphy 1-800 number will begin airing and recording callers' opinions on Monday, Sept. 14 and will run throughout the campaign.
The Johnston & Murphy 1-800 hotline is not without detractors who question whether poking fun at the next man who'll fill their shoes is a bit like biting the foot that feeds them.
Responded Wall, "We don't believe people should criticize the President until they've walked a mile in his shoes."
Wall's footwork is befitting of a political solemaker.
